A sailing boat withstanding every wavet

Even little children can craft this colourful sailing boat quite fast. Since the boat hull is made of styrofoam foam, there is nothing against an exciting sailing trip on the water.

Materials:

  • 1 styrofoam bowl, alternatively a flat freezer
    storage container
  • 1 paper box
  • 1 cork
  • 1 wooden pick
  • wool yarn
  • tinted paper, various colours
  • Pritt glue stick
  • Pritt Creative & Easy PVA glue

Tools:

  • scissors
  • pencil
  • thick needle, alternatively a nail

Instructions:

Step 1

Choose a paper box which fits an upright cork. The mast will be inserted later into the cork, so it should sit properly in the paper box. It’s best to fixate the cork with some Pritt Creative & Easy PVA glue that it cannot fall over.

Step 2

Close the paper box and cover it with tinted paper. For the portholes you can use the cap of the Pritt glue stick as stencil.

 Step 3

Glue the paper box with Pritt Creative & Easy PVA glue onto the styrofoam bowl. Wait some time until the glue is dried before you go on.

Step 4

Attach the mast to the paper box. With one finger you can feel where the cork is inside the paper box. Now make a hole with a needle or nail and then insert the wooden pick.

Step 5

Ask your parents to help you with the next step, because it’s easier then. Tie the yarn to the top of the mast. Both ends will be knotted beneath the boat hull. It is helpful to notch the edges of the styrofoam bowl in order that yarn cannot slip. Make sure that the yarn is taut when you knot the ends together.

Step 6

Cut out the big sail from tinted paper. You decide the shape and size. But leave some space on the top of the mast for a flag. Glue one side of the sail onto the wooden pick. It is easier if you fold the edge of the sail and glue the wooden pick in between.

Step 7

Finally cut out some coloured pennants from tinted paper and glue them along the yarn. The mast top should get a coloured flag as well. And now you can launch your sailing boat. Ship ahoy!

Hints:

Fixate the sail with clothes pegs to the mast that it cannot slip. Your hands are free and the glue has time to dry. It is also useful for attaching the pennants and the flag.

For parents/ adults:

Help your child with fixing the sail cords.
